Superintendent Brady Barnes

TO:  Parent/Guardian of Newkirk Public School Student

DATE:  March 16th, 2018

As many of you are aware, Oklahoma’s public education system remains underfunded and our educators are severely underpaid.  There has been much talk in recent weeks about a possible school shut down across the state.  Although the short term effects of a school shut down would be bad, the long term effects would be horrendous if something is not done immediately. Although we have an amazing staff here at Newkirk Public Schools, the decisions being made by our legislators are beginning to trickle down to our schools.

  • Fewer and fewer high school graduates are electing to go into education in our state.
  • The ones that do choose to go into education more often than not choose to use their talents out of state.
  • Emergency certified teachers are at an all-time high  (Newkirk currently has 0).
  • Low teacher morale due to insufficient support.
  • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Oklahoma is ranked last in teacher pay.

With the defeat of State Question 779 last year and the recent failure of the Step Up Plan, it is abundantly clear that the time has come to take decisive and drastic action on behalf of our teachers and students to improve the conditions in which they teach and learn.   We cannot stand by and listen to “please just wait one more year” anymore from our elected officials.

The Newkirk Board of Education and School Administration strongly support our teachers.  Due to the state-wide teacher walkout scheduled for April 2nd, 2018, Newkirk Public Schools will be closed until further notice beginning on that day.

Here are a few answers to some questions you may have in regards to the walkout.

  • ALL students will have the opportunity to eat free during the walkout.
    • Breakfast will be from 7:30 - 815
    • Lunch will be from 11:30 - 12:30
    • Both will take place in the Elementary School
  • Graduation will still take place on May 12th, 2018.
  • Prom will still take place on April 7th, 2018.
  • High school activities will continue.

Information about the return to school will be sent out via the school all-call system and the various school Facebook pages.
