GIFTED AND TALENTED (GATs) QUALIFYING
Students at Newkirk High School may qualify through Gifted in Academics or Specific Academic Ability, or through Talent in creative thinking, performing arts (dance, drama, or music), visual arts, or leadership.
For academics, students take the Cognitive Abilities Test in 3rd grade and 6th grade. Automatic qualification happens when students score at or above the 97th percentile. If they do not, the school counselor will determine if the student can qualify using multiple criteria.
For talent, a nomination form is available for parents, students, or other adults to recommend a student for consideration. If the counselor determines the first set of criteria is met through the nomination form, then the student will have opportunity to develop a portfolio to highlight the skills for which he or she is nominated. If the portfolio sufficiently meets criteria, then a student can qualify. Upon qualification, the counselor will notify the parents or guardians to secure permission to joing GATs.
